Training Information

During the internship, students will learn Music Therapy techniques, including Neurologic Music Therapy, with children to address goals to improve communication, motor, sensory, behavioral, academic, cognitive and social skills.  Students will be exposed to the use of many forms of communication, including picture communication, sign language, speech and adaptive devices.  Students will learn methods of making the music therapy experience multi sensory and beneficial for each individual.  Interns will be given the opportunity to create or adapt songs to address specific needs to individuals.  Interns will gain experience in facilitating music therapy sessions with children; communicating music therapy processes with children's families and other professionals; and completing assessments, quarterly reviews and other paperwork.

In addition to individual sessions, students will have the opportunity to participate in leading groups at Bowling Green Charter School working with children with orthopedic challenges.  Students will also participate in presentations to parent support groups and other professionals.  Interns participate in all aspects of the company including any in-services and trainings provided to the staff.

Facility Description

MTGO is located in an attractive office building near downtown Sacramento and less than five minute from California State University Sacramento. MTGO employs eight full-time and two part-time Board Certified Music Therapists. Five out of the ten therapists on staff have completed the Neurologic Music Therapy training and hold an additional title of Neurologoic Music Therapist. This allows the intern to observe different styles and approaches to a variety of clientele on a daily basis. Each therapist has a caseload of approximately twenty-five children with a variety of disabilities. Services are provided in individual sessions or sibling groups with multiple therapists. Depending on the client, services can be provided in the home, at the MTGO clinic, school, or daycare.

Internship Application Process

MTGO accepts applications year round and strongly encourages an in person interview to see the facility, observe sessions, and talk with the staff and current interns. We are currently accepting applications for September and December 2009, please be sure to complete the application and interview process prior to December 15th.
